Review of The Devil's Advocate (1997) by Haven W — 04 Nov 2018
The average person would have their own differing reasons to be turned off from ultimately loving this film. Even Satanists would become interested and then less interested. Christians, too. Atheists, as well.
Even agnostics. Especially the middle of the road people who don't vote or think about much of anything. What it comes down to is a metaphor about what people are willing to do to succeed. Take out all the specifics used as metaphor and just view it as the hypothetical point which should be blatantly obvious to anyone alive.
A man is willing to bend the rules to get ahead and eventually realizes that as he succeeds he finds himself among greater bullshitters than himself, and as he heads for even greater success, it ruins the part of his life that was honest and sincere.
This film is about moral integrity, honesty, and critical thought. I see no reason how the film could be considered bad unless one were to wish that there be no nudity or violence, or if they wished for there to be no religious theme.
As a non-religious person, I think it's still fit to receive five stars. It isn't the best film of all time, but it's deserving of the highest rating due to the overall quality, message, and resolution that a film could possibly deliver.
