Review of The Devil's Candy (2016) by Larry H — 31 Jul 2017
The setup is something we've seen hundreds of times before. What sets it apart from the pack is how it subverts genre tropes, it's filled with great performances, and simply how well-made it is.
Pruitt Taylor Vince stands out in a disturbing role that carries a presence whenever he is on screen. The actors playing family members are also quite good. As bits of the horror puzzle are put into place the film develops the family into believable, relatable characters.
This adds emotional weight to the narrative once the shit hits the fan. And really, it hits hard. This is an appropriately grungy-looking film to mesh with the overall story and the metal soundtrack. There are many shades of darkness in the cinematography mixed in a grainy seedy-ness.
It exudes color when needed, mostly to prove its points or enhance the dread of a scene.
