Review of The Devil's Double (2011) by Kevin M — 11 Dec 2011
I really haven't seen much for stand out performances this year but Dominic Cooper easily carries this movie with one of the best performances I've seen in a long time. He inhabits both characters flawlessly and for the most part you genuinely believe that he is two people.
Both characters are night and day. Latif is a dedicated soldier. Very conserved. While the role of Uday is way on the other side of the spectrum. Not just on emotions but also in his voice and characterisms.
All in all it's almost like 3 characters. Latif the soldier, Uday, and Latif pretending to be Uday. If he doesn't win I'll be highly disappointed. As for the excess, obscenity, gratuitous violence and material wealth that some other reviewers have complained about, well, that was Bagdad in the '80's, which pretty much is an even resemblance to Scarface's Miami world.
The human connection element was most fascinating, as we wonder what we would do if placed in a similar situation. We are really find ourselves with Latif on his journey, as we see him discover a reason to live and how his life perspective changes.
This will be a tough one to beat for best of the year.
