Review of The Dilemma (2011) by Lady D — 17 Jan 2012
Remember when Ron Howard actually cared about what he was directing? Backdraft, A Beautiful Mind, Frost/Nixon? This movie had none of the caliber as any of these.Vince Vaughn and Kevin James play Ronnie Valentine and Nick Brannen, two best friends since college who go into the engine design business together.
Nick is happily married to Geneva (Winona Ryder), and the two are relationship role models for Ronnie. When Ronnie catches Geneva with another man he is more devastated than Nick would ever be and vows to tell his friend of his wife's indiscretion.
Supposedly all this funny stuff happens and all of Ronnieâ(TM)s passive-aggressive ways eventually turn on him ending in an intervention where everyone vomits the truth. Although it doesn't end happily ever after, it ends the way that's best for everyone.
And WHO doesn't like a good intervention joke?I kept forgetting that Vince Vaughn's character was named Ronnie. All I could see was Vince. He produced the same formula for acting that I've seen in just about every other movie he's been in.
The fact that he looked stoned the whole time indicated to me that he really didn't need to step out of his comfort zone too much.Jennifer Connelly as Ronnie's serious girlfriend did a good enough job to where I would almost forgive her for her part in "He's Just Not That Into You"Â?.
Written by Alan Loeb, writer of "Things We Lost in the Fire"Â?, "21"Â? and "Wall Street II", unfortunately there was just not enough meat in this story to make it into a movie.
I didn't feel the need to get up and walk out in the middle of it, and it was entertaining enough, it just wasn't a film that needed to be done.
