Review of The Disaster Artist (2017) by John S — 07 Jan 2018
Anyone hear of an infamous little movie called The Room? Well, after seeing this, we may be witnessing a mentioning of the film at the Oscars this year...........Believe me, I know how crazy this sounds, but I'm really not kidding.
In quests of exploring the vast, elaborate pantheon of film (or art in general), adventurers will discover, among many things, a myriad of factors governing the aspect of quality. The predominant factor is this: quality is a unique and individual interpretation defined by opinion and constructed through emotion. Consider now those infamously bad films throughout the ages, such as The Room, which paradoxically have given fans such tremendous joy and are still being discussed and re-watched. How does quality apply here? Are these bad movies or good movies? The accurate response is that they are both, and The Disaster Artist could not be more aware of this. The Disaster Artist is a masterful portrait centered on the arduous but ambitious quest of two friends to succeed in the movie business and who ultimately end up crafting one of the greatest bad movies ever made. It is clearly conveyed that The Disaster Artist is a passion project with extensive attention and care given to every detail, from the sheer phenomenal, Oscar-worthy performance by James Franco as Tommy Wiseau to the astounding supporting cast, the intricate set designs, and the amazing shot-for-shot reshoots of scenes from The Room featuring this film's cast. The Disaster Artist unconditionally respects, appreciates, and admires its subjects and source material, recognizing both their utter ridiculousness as well as their irrefutable charm. The Room, in its infamy and unintentional hilarity, has become the most beloved, discussed, and referenced so-bad-it's-good movie since Ed Wood's Plan 9 From Outer Space, and after seeing The Disaster Artist, I've never been more motivated to see Tommy Wiseau's magnum opus again. This film is a must-see for anyone who has ever heard of The Room or is even interested in the creative filmmaking process.
