Review of The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (2007) by Eric H — 11 Feb 2013
Based on the novel about the true story of writer Jean-Dominique Bauby (Mathieu Amalric), a man who is at he prime of his life until he suffers a stroke, and only his left eye isn't paralyzed. He communicates perfectly in his mind, but can't articulate it to people around him.
We, as the viewers, get to hear what he's thinking, feeling and experiencing, but the outside world in the movie cannot, until he learns how to blink letters to make words. What makes this film so fantastic is the sheer utter horror in dealing with paralysis.
To not be able to express to people how you're feeling must be the worst feeling in the world. And as Jean-Dominique struggles in his real life, his imagination - which also has been left undamaged - soars to new heights.
It's a truly great film.
