Review of The Element of Crime (1984) by Lasse C — 27 Dec 2012
A reviewer below called this "challenging", and I have to admit that perfectly sums up The Element of Crime. Frequently incomprehensible, playing coy with a surreal universe mired in dystopian overtones, as seen through the eyes of an unreliable narrator. The visual style is absolutely stifling with tinted duotone, overly dark, murky, dream-like. It's a hard film to recommend, but at the same time it is worth seeing.
Really, about an hour and twenty minutes of the run time feels like important preamble. It is setting up the dominoes to watch them fall. And if the falling had felt more impressive, less predictable, then this would doubtlessly rate higher.
