Review of The Element of Crime (1984) by Simon D — 07 Nov 2010
Thank god Lars Von Trier was able to find work after making this, I could understand if he didn't. I don't care if this is a film which you have to look deeply into to find the budding genius, I found it downright boring.
The whole film was filmed at night, under orange lights, and in the rain. The acting was awful; Michael Elphick trying not to be cockney was painful. The screenplay was dull and the story was just too complicated.
I appreciate the cinematography but that's about it. It's an awful film and I hope that the next two in the series are not like this as I've already committed myself to work through the back catalogue of Lars Von Trier.
