Review of The End of the Tour (2015) by Jennifer W — 11 Aug 2018
I've never read David Foster Wallace, so I can't say how a fan of his would respond to this movie. Much of my impression of DFW has been colored by Mary Karr's revelations about his abuse and stalking of her.
The depiction in this movie of DFW as a sensitive and principled man therefore seem to play too much into a romanticized and one-dimensional version of who this person was. But this movie is also an examination of the dynamics between a journalist and his subject, delving into the awkward, friendly, and hostile nature of that relationship.
This would be an interesting topic for another movie, but this film is far too concerned with the mythos of DFW, painting the deeply troubled man as some kind of rebel against the system, not in spite of his mental illness but possibly because of it.
It was also boring.
