This sequel deserves its place as a sequel, rather than just being a mindless reprise of the original. I rate it in the context of action films, and in that category it scores very well. In many ways, the Equalizer films are like a good Asian martial arts movie-choreographed fight scenes embedded in a moral lesson conveyed by the wise master at the center of the story.

Denzel Washington once again provides depth in his character, a reserved and philosophical man doing good for others which occasionally requires exacting a violent justice on those who deserve it. The sequel is every bit as stylish and varied in its pacing, with even more time spent engaging avenger Robert McCall with some characters he takes a liking to.

Mild-mannered Lyft driver is a kind and watchful player in the city-both a cover and a way to meet people who might need his help. McCall is no superhero, but he possesses almost superhuman fighting skills and wits.

At times, the implausible aspects can be a little jarring, but the director and cinematographer do a good job of allowing us to suspend disbelief. There's a bonus clip in which some of the film's other actors and producers emphasize to excess that McCall does his "bada$$" thing in creative ways.

That's somewhat true, of course, but undermines the film's richness-two hours of subtle interaction, building character, and periodic explosions of righteous violence against bad guys. The action is nicely choreographed and visually delicious, but there are also moments of tenderness and teaching.

But those who only watch for the martial mayhem fail to appreciate the more complex qualities of this tale.
