No one truly knows what happened during the experiments performed on subjects in the mid 70s. They are often quoted as the reason for modern ethics, but little reaserch has been done outside the "commonly excepted" version.
We know the experiments ended well before they were meant to. This movie, though not following a historical timeline, is a reasonable outcome for men facing the unthinkable.
