Review of The Fate of the Furious (2017) by Swaggersaurus D — 13 Jan 2019
Technically the best movie of the entire franchise. Now, for all those complaints out there, I do have a few words to say.
Firstly, the sceptic viewers that say: "What, that's not possible in real life!". IT'S THE ENTIRE POINT! The initiative with movies like this is to suspend your disbelief for the sake of the movie. And, if you don't want to do that, then, I'm sorry, but this movie isn't for you. When I go see a FAST & FURIOUS movie, I expect nothing more than just over-the-top action. Because, yes, I want to see Dwayne Johnson slide torpedoes across ice, and yes, I want to see Dominic Toretto and his crew outrun (or should say outdrive) a submarine. I don't expect anything less than that. I understand the deal I'm getting, and when I'm out of the cinema, I'm happy as hell.
Some others complain about the storyline. But, in my opinion, this storyline is by far, BY FAR, the best. I really loved the direction this movie was going in. What if the leader of your band turned against you? Why would he betray you? How would you feel? And, more importantly, if you ever had to confront him again, who would be better: the band of students or the lone master? These were the ideas that the eighth installment of the franchise had incorporated. And it deepens the characters and make them seem more real, because each of them are all put in situations they don't want to be in but have to face anyways. How far would Dominic Toretto go for his family? Does Letty lose faith in Dom? Does the group decide to stay together, are there some arguments now that the leader is gone? And the hacker battle between Ramsey and Cipher shows that Ramsey has new competition. She's not the best anymore. Even the rivalry and tension between Luke and Hobbs, and how they get over it, is interesting in terms of character development. This movie is all about character development and their strengths and weaknesses.
The villain is another point to talk about. She is so different and yet so well conceived. Because instead of brute force, Cipher uses her intelligence, manipulation and hacker skills to stay one step ahead of the group. All her attacks are made from a distance, and this problem challenges the crew even more.
This movie's stunts were also authentic, unlike, say, for instance, FURIOUS 7, where they used a lot of green screen. I really appreciated that, because fans CAN tell when something is fake or not.
Overall, I can't find any reasons not to enjoy this movie. I loved it.
