I made the mistake of watching this the day after reading the book. I couldn't put the book down, because it was so interesting and kept me wanting to know what happens.
None of that happened in the film. It took out all the thrills and left only the dull stuff. The bits that would have had the best punch just didn't happen or were drawn out for some reason, which lost the effect.
PS: Narrate or dialogue, don't do both. ffs.
