Review of The Greatest Showman (2017) by Gavin J — 03 Oct 2018
Lets not kid ourselves. Any musical about circus freaks, with Hugh Jackman as the ringleader/master, is going to trainwreck it, hard, and this does. But there is something fascintating, about the shearing metal, the sparks, the flying of body parts, the blood, that one cannot look away from.
This is soooooo bad it is actually good, and may even develop a cult following. The freaks themselves are excellent, from the strangely alluring beared lady to the cute as a button Tom Thumb. The costumes and the dazz-tacular are top notch.
The music is less so, but no so so that you turn away. At the first song my thumb quivered nervously over the change-channel button. I held my arm up, transfixed. After a few moments, perhaps a minute, I knew I was hooked and I was going to likely see this stink pile through to the end.
