Review of The Greatest Showman (2017) by Joshua N — 03 Apr 2018
It's all empty spectacle and disposable tunes, with barely a hint of genuine emotion (coming mostly from Michele Williams and Zendaya). And it's not even much of a spectacle -- there's none of the stylistic excess or creativity you get in something like Moulin Rouge.
Instead we get janky CGI elephants and horses and voguing sideshow freaks. The music is all highly-polished millennial whoops and endless choruses, which serves the younger cast members, but looks supremely silly on Hugh Jackman.
Some of it is a fascinating mess, most of it is just a mess.
