The critics were overly harsh IMO. It's not meant to be a biopic. The songs and dances are great. I can see the shady side of Barnum sufficiently without going into more detail. At the end of the day, the inclusive message is worth the price of admission.
And on the big screen you can really appreciate the spectacle.
