Review of The Grudge 3 (2009) by Salah A — 21 Feb 2013
After the abysmal second chapter in the American reboot of the Grudge series, The Grudge 3 not only beats out the second film but also becomes the best in the series. Granted, this is not saying much for this mediocre horror series.
The film picks off where the last left off with the surivivor in a mental hospital. Once the haunting spirit of Kayako kills him (seriously, not a spoiler. This happens in the first four minutes of the film), she continues to haunt the apartment building in Chicago.
Living there are siblings Max, Lisa, and Rose. When they find out that the survivor has died, they notice strange things beginning to occur. With bodies piling up, it's up to a native Japanese woman to help out with ending the curse once and for all.
Now, The Grudge 3 is no where near a perfect horror film. The effects are pretty bad, the acting is spotty, and the scares are minimal. However, I was still able to enjoy the film for what it was. There really were some moments where the hairs were standing on my neck.
Let it just be warned though that there are a lot of slow scenes to be found in this movie. I found myself almost drifting off at points. Another thing that makes the Grudge 3 work is the fact that it FINALLY answers questions that left viewers hanging in the past two films.
I was happy to finally understand what the hell was going on and the explanations weren't too bad. Overall, The Grudge 3 is a decent little horror flick. It's nothing you need to rush out to see, but is worth your time when you sit down to watch it.
