Review of The Guernsey Literary & Potato Peel Pie Society (2018) by Jeremy H — 12 May 2018
A lovely film. The plot develops at a steady tempo, the mix of characters is delightful, and all the actors were excellent. I did not know what to expect as the reviews were so mixed. But it was well worth seeing and to be recommended if you like romantic, kind stories without the violence and bad language that so many directors seem to think necessary these days.
And the story-line about how grim wartime conditions were in the Channel Islands, and the dilemmas that people faced to survive, is not only fascinating but hopefully will highlight to a modern audience how lucky the rest of the UK was during the war, and how we are all so lucky - through the bravery of a few, not just service men and women - to be able to enjoy our freedoms today.
Let us count our blessings. Especially if we can do so via the charms of the beautiful and irresistible Lilly James, the smouldering Michiel Huisman and the other brilliant members of the cast who all acted to perfection.
