Review of The Hate U Give (2018) by Joel V — 19 Jan 2019
It's exactly the sort of movie that you think it is. Your preconceived notions about the movie will be confirmed, and the movie will win awards and accolades, all predictably so. The major problem with this movie is that it is just so.
. "black and white". Both racially and in terms of moralistic grandstanding. The good guys are exactly who you'd expect, the bad guys are exactly who you'd expect; there's nothing here that cannot be accurately predicted, given an understanding of the political message of the film.
But please, lavish praise upon it; you'll be applauded for your "wokeness". And in the end, isn't that all that matters?
