Review of The Host (2006) by Ben L — 08 Oct 2015
The Host is Bong Joon-ho's attempt at creating a classic monster movie. I appreciated that he made the whole thing feel a bit smaller because it focused on one family, but the sad truth is I didn't like most of the members of that family.
Also there was a strange bit of over-acting from some of those characters, to the point where I questioned if it was intentionally done for comedy. There were some definite tone shifts that made no sense to me.
The movie was very gutsy about just showing the creature early and often, which sometimes worked, but there were other moments where it appeared extremely artificial. The best moments were in the creatures home where the little girl is fighting to survive.
There was a lot of tension and intrigue there. The problem is I don't think this is my type of movie. It fits in a genre I have very little interest in, and it isn't unique enough to hold my attention.
A decently-made film, but not one I would recommend.
