Review of The House with a Clock in Its Walls (2018) by Chris R — 20 Sep 2018
With the star-power, sets, CG and storyline, this should have been a great movie. It sucked! I expected to feel the same way I always felt in the Harry Potter movies; the little kid in my head sat in the theater saying, "WOW!" During this movie, the little kid in my head was continually disappointed.
There's just something missing. The wonderment is missing. It seems like it's a Jack Black prerequisite to turn every movie into "Fatty's Fart V." The topiary flying lion constantly farting and shitting leaves is ridiculous.
Seeing a baby with a Jack Black head is disturbing. Cate Blanchett was good, but is embarrassed when she goes to cash her checks. Owen Vaccaro playing Lewis is OK. It's obvious why he was cast. He makes great facial expressions, the audience is forced to see them too much.
Like everything in the movie, too much.
