Review of The House with a Clock in Its Walls (2018) by Joe M — 29 Dec 2018
Endearing flick that is definitely more for the kiddie crowd. I never read the book, so can't compare it, but the movie just was too cloying and non-confrontational to really get up any real scares other than for youngsters. Biggest detraction - Jack Black. The man is just too, too hammy in his performance (as he so often is). Blanchett was charming, yet overwhelmed by Black and the juvenile material. Sets and graphics were outstanding yet still had a certain Disneyesque cleanliness that tries, yet fails, to achieve that Tim Burton like quality. Pales in comparison to adaptions of Roald Dahl's works such as "Matilda" or "The Witches".
In short, unless you're watching this with 5th graders or younger, pass on "The House with a Clock in Its Walls".
