Review of The Hustler (1961) by Trevor T — 07 Jan 2015
If you watch The Hustler for only one reason let it be for Paul Newman. To watch Newman is to watch an acting clinic. It's raw, emotional and at no point does it look like Newman is truly acting. He inhabits the character Fast Eddie and turns it into an iconic performance that can be appreciated by anyone regardless of how they enjoy the overall film.
His demeanor is effortless throughout the movie whether its the confident swagger of a hustler, the ruthless efficiency of a vicious competitor, or the dejected slump of a man who lost everything. Newman along with a terrific supporting class demands attention and earns every bit of it as a man who's identity transcends the archetype of a hustler.
He's a conflicted character study of a man who's passion possesses him. An excellent film.
