Review of The Imitation Game (2014) by Houston M — 04 Dec 2018
The Imitation Game is a cultivating drama that will leave you on the edge of your seat. It is set in 1939 at the beginning of World War II and follows a brilliant mathematician, Alan Turing, who is recruited by the secret British Intelligence Agency MI6 to solve the German Code 'Enigma', which was thought to be unbreakable.
Although the movie itself is spectacular, Benedict Cumberbatch's portrayal of Alan Turing is remarkable. He can keep true to the name of the film and imitate Turing through his quirky and awkward body language.
Everything from his movement to his speech impediments paint a vivid picture of what the master mathematician may have been, which is incredible seeing as everything Benedict Cumberbatch knew about Turing is what he read.
He plays a very soft yet assertive genius who isn't always able to pick up on social cues and quite frequently creates awkward situations. His portrayal of Turing can easily be compared to Tom Hanks in "Forrest Gump", or Ashton Kutcher in "Jobs".
This is because he plays his part very well but is not over the top, so he never comes off as offensive. The movie is great for all occasions and provides a wonderful insight into the harsh times of The Second World War, as well as showing the "nerds" behind the frontlines working to end the war.
If you are inclined to solving puzzles, this is a must watch film that will bring you back in time to the hardest code ever broken.
