Review of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks (2017) by Tyler R — 27 Apr 2017
What I loved most about the book was the fact that the world not only learned about HeLa cells, but that we got to know who Henrietta was. We learned of her life, her personality, and her journey through her illness.
The movie gave us so little of that. 95% of the movie focused on Rebecca SKloot and her story of the research she did. Henrietta probably had a total of 5 minuets of screen time, and only had a few lines.
As a result we lost the most important aspect of this story. Considering her cells have impacted every single human alive today, I think it is important that we know who she was. What this movie did was promote Rebecca Skloot as the hero of the day, when in fact it is actually Henrietta who should be revered.
I hope this will inspire those who have not read the book to read it, because the movie fails to teach us who Henrietta really was. I hope that they will read the book and find out as I did.?
