Review of The Incredible Hulk (1977) by Jake C — 12 Jan 2019
If IRON MAN, released only a month prior, was a testament to the nascent Marvel ethos that the person behind the mask matters more than their powers, then this behemoth is a reminder that the studio, though successful right out of the gate thanks to its inherent fanbase and kairotic imaginary, took a long time to find its footing.
All the best parts of IRON MAN---the rapid-fire wit, the patient character arcs, the human depth of its heroes---are completely absent here, as the movie does the bare minimum in establishing either its characters or narrative drive.
The end result is less "HULK SMASH!" than it is "HULK SNOOZE...".
