Review of The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017) by Terry M — 07 Oct 2018
This movie is very depressing. A family set up to fail by a menacing child who lives nearby. What initially seems like a good family life set in a big house in a nice suburb soon begins to unravel when malevolent forces come to fruition.
There is no solace to be taken from anywhere in this bleak movie. It is not only the antagonist that creates a sense of unease but also the character of Colin Farrell is cast to be this odd doctor who speaks consistently in monotone and his wife is not much better. Everyone seems to be cast to be wooden which make the movie difficult to watch.
Young Irish actor Barry Keoghan plays the role of tormentor excellently. He has an eerie quality about him which makes him well suited to playing a menacing type of character.
I liked the way the film was shot but whilst the style was based on old horror movies, the unsettling music was overused.
The movie seems to try to foster a sense of unease similar to the Lobster which I didn't like either. The reviewer above sums it up.. This is the feel bad movie of the year. Recommend to your enemy.
