Review of The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017) by Private U — 28 Feb 2018
At the end of this two-hour disappointment, you'll feel like you haven't watched a movie at all. The way the characters react to what happens to them is far from believable. The fact that they're not angry at the boy or particularly sad about what's happening is absurd.
Tragedy strikes them and they're mostly quiet and collected all the way to the end. The only one who acts on what happened is Colin Ferril, and he still seems hesitant. Normally I love Nicole Kidman movies, and she did well with what she was given, but this movie as a whole is absurd- no climax, no resolution, no logic, and no coherent story.
All the characters talk in the exact same flat, monotonous, emotionless way, and what they say doesn't even reflect the potential intensity of a story like this. In fact, the way they talk is so distracting that you can't get past it in order to listen to the bit of dialogue the writer threw at the audience.
This and the lack of character development, a denouement, etc. is an insult to the viewer's intelligence. The utter lack of any believable emotion is the only thing that's "unsettling" about this movie.
