Review of The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017) by Patrick C — 28 Oct 2017
I pondered over this movie for a while after I watched it, trying to figure out all the hidden metaphors and symbolism?s but I gave up and went to the internet for some answers. Once I looked up the mythological influences behind it I thought, okay.
..cool....fine. But I would have had no way of making that connection while watching it. If some viewers understood it immediately then kudos to them but this just felt like a frustrating display of pretentiousness.
I love figuring out complex movies but if there?s nothing at all to latch on to I?m lost. I couldn?t grasp the motivations of any of the characters, besides Martin, and it was impossible to feel any sort of empathy with these robotic monotone people.
I get that that?s a stylistic choice and I have to admit it got a couple laughs out of me but I just couldn?t wrap my head around anything that was going on in this movie. The camera shots were nice and very reminiscent of Kubrick?s and the acting was good too but it couldn?t save this at all.
I wanted to leave halfway through and by the end I felt as though I had wasted two hours of my life. I honestly don?t know why this film was so well received. I get that it?s layered, complex, metaphorical and stylistic.
I even appreciated the subtle dark comedy but overall this was just a below average interpretation of a Greek myth disguised as a very strange highly fanciful psychological thriller where none of the characters actions made any sense.
