Review of The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (2015) by Matt L — 23 Jan 2018
Sorry that I didn't see this in theaters, its been a while since I felt a movie held that worth to me to see it at top dollar on opening night. The actresses and actors were top notch, subtle and not so subtle humor was a nice mix, and for once, a plot that didn't require you to relinquish your common sense and disbelief to go along with the story.
What was surprising was the lack of cliche or push of an ideology with both of the main women. They were given plausible roles and acted well, but that neither had to get nude or turn it into a bikini shoot or soft porn for you to walk away admiring their beauty, nor did they have to play the weak and helpless female needing rescue any more then the men themselves got into trouble and each had to help eachother.
It wasn't overly or lackingly reciprical, it just felt like all the BS and crap scenes were thrown out and it got down to telling a tasteful story about a group that earned mutual respect and brought individual skills to compliment.
I know that sounds all kid glove boring, but...watch it...there's a quality that you can buy into lacking from most movies. I suppose in the broad sense you could guess the overarching plot good guys vs bad guys and the ending.
..but the story had enough substance to it, the american and the russian sell their animosity just enough for you to think you have it figured out, only to see a plot twist and a few surprises thrown in.
..really they acted so well that it allowed you to relax and just enjoy the movie instead of be set on edge at some superhuman or super technology or unrealisticness let alone any glaring political ideology.
I know its an adaptation of an old television show, but it has a quality about it that makes you think that it was the genesis on this series. I hope they continue to do more movies and reboot it.
