Review of The Man Who Knew Infinity (2016) by Jonathan H — 14 May 2016
This was an amazing and heart-wrenching tale about the interplay and dichotomy between two worlds. Staying for love vs. leaving for opportunity, genius vs. established traditions, respect vs. racism, logic vs. intuition, first world comforts vs. third world poverty, academia vs. real life, family vs. individualism -- and throughout all of it the human spirit on both sides trying to connect and bridge the gap. The acting was incredibly compelling. Dev Patel embodied the brilliance, conflict, and pain of Ramanujan and his very human struggle to share his gifts and visions with a world that did not understand him. Jeremy Irons was a brilliant Hardy -- edgy, pushing boundaries, but trying to work withing the system as it is. He brilliantly portraying the kind of insensitivity that living in an institution can bring, but also the inner conflict, regret, and personal growth that comes from honest introspection that true friendship can bring.
I was moved from the first scenes to the last. Incredibly powerful and bold in its honesty and ability to pull at both your heart-strings and your sensibilities at the same time, leaving you feeling like you really know the characters and feel the pain and joys of each one without judgement. It's one of the best movies I've ever seen -- like Good Will Hunting on steroids. This is the real deal and you would be missing out on a masterpiece by not seeing it!
