Review of The Many Saints of Newark (2021) by Mickeymush — 03 Oct 2021
I liked the Sopranos but this movie was just a bunch of rehashed violent and racist mob movie scenes slapped together for shock value without much thought. I also don't understand why they chose Ray Liotta to play the part of both brothers, he was good but not so great that he had to play both roles.
This movie had two major different themes going on at the same time: Tony growing up in the mafia family and the oppression and rebellion of Afro Americans in the 60s and 70s when Tony was growing up.
The two story lines were oddly forced together in this movie. This movie portrayed both the African Americans and the mafia wanting to get rich by any means necessary. I did enjoy the scene where young Tony and his friends hijacked the Mr.
Softee truck and had a blast giving the free ice cream to the kids in the park. It showed a peek into how Tonys mind worked as a youngster without using gruesome stereo typical violence. I also liked the scenes of the buildings and classic cars and neighborhoods of the 1960's and 70's.
Glad that I only paid the senior discount and not the full price.
