Review of The Menu (2022) by Olivierpiel — 05 Jan 2023
Total nihilism. smug narcissism. Not the one displayed by the chef but by our main protagonist, and that last snarky smile, who will survive as it is evident from the start. The film is supposed to be a satire of consumerism, elitism, "patriarchy", our lack of meaning in our post-industrial so-called "Western"culture and all those clichés, but at its core, as displayed at the end, with the "double cheeseburger", it is populistic, hypocritical and manipulating. The chef quoting Dr King, as if he were himself a "victim of society" was simply revolting.
Sad to see great acting, Ralph Fiennes, wasted on this. Cinematography was also very slick but ultimately useless.
