Review of The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected) (2017) by Ryan B — 18 Jun 2018
How does anyone even write a screenplay for something like The Meyerowitz Stories? Noah Baumbach is a master at making realistic dialogue flow poetically. While writers like Aaron Sorkin are worthy of praise for portraying speech as is could be, Bambach succeeds at portraying it like it is.
As terrible as the characters seemingly are at communicating with each other, constantly talking over and ignoring what the others are saying, the dialogue still speaks volumes to the viewer. Watching Adam Sandler and his brother Ben Stiller carry on within the same conversation about each other's lives you understand their dynamic.
How Sandler is jealous and Stiller is looking for validation. Without question, this is Sandler's best role to date. After years of shallow broad comedies and Netflix disasters I thought he was content to remake the same paycheck earning schlock over and over again.
The Meyerowitz Stories is a well written and well-acted tale about jealousy and family, and it was released directly to Netflix so you should probably watch it sooner rather than later.
