Flashes of action and some occasionally strong scenes do not save this movie. The big problem is that the main character, the monkey king, is so unlikeable. Vain, arrogant and completely self-centred I found myself cheering for the bad guys more often than not.
He's not out to save the world, he's out to rule over it. His girl sidekick is also not worth supporting. She betrays the monkey king all the way through with her rationale being "I had no choice!".
Yes, you did actually have a choice. I know it's based on an epic Chinese tale, but the plot was still confusing and all over the place. Found myself quite bored throughout.
