Review of The Mutations (1974) by Francisco G — 08 May 2011
The Mutations barrows more then a little from Tod Browning's Freaks. As I said in my review of that movie I don't like 'the weirdies'. Alternately titled The Freakmaker it exploits the oddities more then Browning's outing but hey this was the 70s.
All in all not a very good movie but saved by Donald Pleasence who underplays the bio-scientist but is the best thing going. I watched a sort documentary w/ this film & I actually liked it more afterwards.
It made me appreciate what they were able to pull off on such a small budget. But that is really how this movie should be treated; as a low budget feature. It's really nothing more then an exploitation B-movie & truthful probably should get the remake treatment now a days only by an independent.
