Review of The Nun (2018) by Chris O — 11 Sep 2018
Something that isn't an accurate portrayal of the wonders that the Conjuring Universe has brought us thus far.
When a young nun at a cloistered abbey in Romania takes her own life, a priest with a haunted past and a novitiate on the threshold of her final vows are sent by the Vatican to investigate. Together they uncover the order's unholy secret. Risking not only their lives but their faith and their very souls, they confront a malevolent force in the form of the same demonic nun that first terrorized audiences in "The Conjuring 2," as the abbey becomes a horrific battleground between the living and the damned.
Personally, being a huge fan of James Wan, I think they shouldn't touch his ideas without him being involved; just saying. The films that James Wan creates are full of creativity, genuine scares, relatable characters, and mind-blowing scenes. When people try and make cash off his and his crew's ideas, this is the result.
One thing that is solid about this film is the acting. I thought Taissa Farmiga did a great job as the lead and she made this film intense in places where the writing was iffy. I thought she carried the role well and held her ground. The supporting cast was solid but no one was really memorable. I think that's more attributed to the writing than anything though, and not neccesarily on the cast themselves.
The reason we don't care about this film is really two-fold. The first reason, there's no story. Within that statement, that means we learn nothing about the characters. We don't learn about who they are, what they want, nothing. The location is meaningless to us, which brings down the scare level ten-fold. The dialogue is almost laughable at times, and the story doesn't really have an arc to it. Just about everything here was a mess.
Look, there were a couple of really cool shots in this film. There were some moments where I was honestly in awe. But that awe last for about 10 seconds out of the entire 1 hour 30 minute run time. This film didn't know what it was and it didn't know what it was striving to be. I'm glad it's making the franchise money but it isn't something that's good.
In the end, "The Nun" was a lackluster film and not one I would recommend seeing at all.
