Review of The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature (2017) by Hamilton R — 24 Mar 2018

You may be surprised by my 4 star rating for a movie that was SO HORRIBLE. Don't get me wrong, the original Nut Job was horrible. I hated that one. But while this movies horrible trailers (despite appearance by Jackie Chan) made the movie look horrible, funny jokes and hilarious adult references ("Peanut Colada", "We're all gonna die!") made this movie ACTUALLY good. Although "Don't call me cute" wasn't that funny, The unending explosions and jokes about too much singing in animated movies was funny. The two things that were missing were 1) A touching emotional moment. Coco had Miguel crying about Hector dying to Mama Coco. Toy Story 3 had Andy driving away in his car at the end. And of course, Frozen had Anna sacraficing herself for her sister, which led to Elsa hugging her sisters frozen corpse and crying. The Nut Job 2 had nothing. I hate to break it to you Cal Brunker, but Buddy "dying" wasn't all that emotional. Frankly, I thought Precious breaking up with the other dog was more emotional. 2) No lesson. Here is ANOTHER slew of examples about learning your lesson. Coco: Family is SUPER important. Toy Story: Don't be jealous. Monsters Inc.: Leave human children where they belong, they are toxic. Alright, I was joking about the Monsters Inc. one. I mean yeah, Surly makes a joke at the end about how he learned NOTHING and then admits he learned if you pitch together everything works great. They were pitching together the whole movie. Didn't you see the highlight reel where they destroy everything. This is truly one of the most underrated movies by a underdog film company called Open Road Films.

Unfortunately, the failure of The Nut Job pretty much ruined any chance of any sequel with a Fresh rating on the Tomatometer. Its stuck with a horrible 13%. At least they didn't say it was as bad as The Emoji Movie.
