Review of The Nutcracker and the Four Realms (2018) by Carol H — 27 Nov 2018
I had been waiting my entire life to see Disney adapt 'The Nutcracker' and this didn't disappoint. The sets and costumes are visually stunning; I wouldn't be surprised if they got award nominations.
The story - while not the most faithful adaptation - is refreshingly straightforward and updated with modern sensibilities. The protagonist Clara is a particularly uncommon heroine with her love of engineering and believable thought process.
However, there are a few things I will criticize the film for. Firstly, I was a little disappointed that the story's romantic angle was downplayed here. (Why is Disney suddenly so hesitant about romance in their movies?) Secondly, I didn't care for their portrayal of the Mouse King; such a missed opportunity.
Last but definitely not least, I *detested* the 'third act villain twist'. Disney, seriously, ENOUGH with the surprise villains! Those weak spots aside, "The Nutcracker and the Four Realms" is a magical, sincere seasonal movie that I'm sure is destined to become a holiday classic.
