Give or take a Jerry Lewis masterpiece of two, this is the greatest comedy of the classical Hollywood era. People complain that all the opulence adds up to a willful retreat from the realities of WWII.

But the film is about who can get away with what and as such, brings us closer to the reality of people getting thrown into ovens than any of the justly forgotten flag-wavers of the era. Best line: "A posse??!?".
