Review of The Passion of the Christ (2004) by Gerard W — 20 Dec 2018
Simply the most powerful religious-themed movie ever made. It brings the scriptural account of the execution of Jesus alive and makes it real -- at times in an uncomfortable way. I can understand how non-believers might not be receptive to the movie's message.
But I can not understand how they could fail to appreciate its artistic brilliance. And I can not respect -- indeed, I have contempt for -- the majority of professional critics who panned the movie for its unsettling violence or its alleged anti-Semitism when what they really hate is the religious, and especially Christian, sentiment that the movie champions.
The anti-Semitism charge, in particular, is a contemptible and despicable lie which could only be peddled by people who either very dumb or very dishonest. This is very simply one of the best movies ever made.
