Review of The Phantom of the Opera (2004) by Luke D — 02 Aug 2018
"The Phantom of the Opera" is strictly for hardcore music lovers as it is one of the most over the top movies I've seen from the genre. I like musicals, but this one just isn't one of my favorites.
Sure, some musical numbers were solid but some moments felt like they were forced into song and probably would have worked better as dialogue. It is also important to note that I also have never experienced this story on any other platform such as live theatre, so I have nothing to compare it to.
The movie is pretty long, and it definitely feels its length. If you can get past the silliness of it all, the themes are pretty strong and the movie is an okay watch. I personally prefer other musicals as far as film adaptations go and there certainly is a chance this story is better suited for the stage, I just wouldn't know as of right now.
