Review of The Purge: Election Year (2016) by Blake H — 02 Jul 2016
A good if not cliched action-thriller. Adds some horror elements, but I've never found this series to be very scary. While some of the script came off cheesy, Williamson does a good job in his moments of comic relief.
The action was solid to me and fueled this movie. The knife sequence towards the end of the film was very well done in my opinion and one of the best scenes of the movie. While never going above good, it definitely shows a clever spin on political undertones and shows glimpses of some of the political issues of today that are being mimicked in the film.
Finally, I honestly loved Grillo's performance. It's a shame that his film career took off so late, but he provides a great action star that is relatable in his motives and loyal in his actions.
A decent action-thriller that is better than the original, but falls a hair short of the second installment in my opinion!
