Review of The Ritual (2017) by Richard S — 20 Dec 2018
After the sudden and tragic death of one of their friends, 4 friends reunite for a hiking holiday. One of the friends is injured during the hike and so they make the school boy error of taking a short cut through what seems like a never ending forest. It's in the forest that they get the sense they are being stalked by someone or something. They all stay in an abandoned cabin (another school boy error) over night where they are subjected to horrific nightmares that have tapped into their own fears and regrets. From here there is a desperate race to escape the forest and back to civilisation before what is following them catches up with them.
The film had a strong opening plus there was a strong sense of dread and unease during the journey through the forest but this was lost when the big reveal occurred as to what was stalking them. At this point it lost it's horror element and it felt more like a dark fairytale that delved into the realms of fantasy. It wasn't a bad film, just not the story I was expecting.
