Review of The Ruling Class (1972) by Christopher S — 25 Apr 2009
Very unique, but also very unfunny black comedy adapted from the play by Peter Barnes. There are some spirited performances - particularly from Peter O'Toole - and director Peter Medak creates some clever visual touches that keep it from being too stagey.
But the satire is too obvious, and the over the top wackiness is so desperate and forced it's almost painful and pathetic, every gag falls flat and the characters are annoying, screeching caricatures - not to mention the embarrassing musical numbers, and it's far far too long.
A major disappointment.
