Review of The Sea of Trees (2016) by Steve G — 11 Mar 2018
Don't get why critics crapped all over this. Maybe a touch ham-handed at times, but it's a surprisingly beautiful story. The flashbacks aren't as interesting as the present. Matthew has become quite the actor. A very nice turn from him here. Ken, as well. The critics dislike it because of the worldview implications, and perhaps because they're such movie nerds, they saw the twist ending coming.
Critics were put off by the spiritual implications, but when Kurosawa or Mizoguchi do the same, it's considered a masterpiece. They're so full of it.
For the less cynical, it's a nice message. And I'm grateful to have found a GVS film I can truly say I enjoyed. I've never done that before.
Seriously, though, who likes yellow or winter?
