Review of The Shape of Water (2017) by Michael M — 01 Jun 2018
The funny thing with Shape of Water is that really its story is extremely simple and objectively speaking kind of silly. It's essentially the beauty and beast story told again, but from an angle that feels even less human which may be too much for some people.
It still has its moments of heart, and the reasoning and message behind the romance is quite beautiful if not a little campy. The thing is though, that's Del Torro's greatest strength. He is able to take things that are silly and even campy and make them grand and beautiful.
It's a similar film in a lot of ways to Pan's Labyrinth, a fairy tale with an adult edge. It's simple, it's silly, but it's handled so carefully that it works. The acting is perfect across the board, the music is beautiful, and the visuals are breathtaking.
Even without the sound this is just a great movie to look at. It might be Del Torro's best film, I loved it.
