Review of The Shawshank Redemption (1994) by Andrew B — 01 Mar 2018
After thousands of recommendations and "You haven't seen that!?"'s, not to mention it being another film released on my birth year, I finally sat down alone with my cup of coffee this morning and popped in my unopened bluray of the Shawshank redemption. My roommates were gone, the cats felt like cuddling, why not. Expecting a semi-sappy feel good tale, I had no idea the impact this movie would have on me, let alone the mass group of followers it has.
With stellar performances from the cast you could really feel the cold walls of Shawshank prison, not to mention the firm hand of the warden. The story is constantly twisting into new ideas, new failures and accomplishments, more struggles and rewards. As expecting as I was to be unbrushed by the films emotion, the brilliant screenwriting crammed multiple very recognizable personalities into the two and a half hours, making it a force not to be reckoned with. Without spoilers I have to say the payoff was incredible, giving a genuine reason to respect/understand the miracles and tragedies of human life and the way our souls connect. It most definitely helped define the human soul and its interactions which is always considered a successful movie experience.
