Review of The Space Between Us (2017) by Dann M — 03 Feb 2018
The Space Between Us is an interesting character drama about finding your place in the world. When an astronaut on her way to Mars discovers that she's pregnant she's forced to give birth on Mars, and as the child grows up he longs to see Earth and eventual NASA devises a plan to bring him home; but once on Earth he escapes from NASA's medical facility to meet up with a friend that he met online and seeks her help to find his father.
The film does a surprisingly good job at grounding the story and at addressing the realities of the situation (ex. the medical challenges of changing environments). And the cast is pretty solid, featuring Asa Butterfield, Britt Robertson, Carla Gugino, and Gary Oldman.
Still, the plot is a little unfocused and at times doesn't seem to know where it's going and whether it's a romance or a thriller. Also, there are several contrivances that seem forced in order to get the story from point A to point B and tie things together.
Yet overall, The Space Between Us is a fun and entertaining film.
