Review of The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023) by Dukejon — 12 Apr 2023

I thought this movie was ok, but no more than that. First the good stuff. Graphics, animations and audio are spot on. Voice acting is very good. There's plenty of fan service here for fans of the game.

However the plot is very safe, predictable and by the numbers. I found myself quite bored for long periods, until the third act when the movie goes completely over the top. It also wasn't nearly as funny as I was expecting; a few laugh out loud moments but mostly meh.

Also surprisingly violent; as a punch in the face is a punch in the face whether you're a video game character or not. Overall I'd say this isn't as good as the first Sonic movie, and nowhere near as good as the Lego movie.
